Insulation thickness calculator for ventilated facades in Georgia

Choose the climate zone, the wall and the insulation — the calculator shows the minimum insulation thickness that meets the wall U-value limit of Resolution No. 354.

How the calculation works

The thermal resistance of the wall is the sum of the internal and external surface resistances (0.13 + 0.13 m²K/W for a ventilated facade, where the cladding and the ventilated air gap are not counted), the resistance of the masonry or concrete layer and the resistance of the insulation. The U-value is the reciprocal of this sum plus the correction ΔU for the point thermal bridges created by the brackets.

ZoneTypical cityWall U-value limit, W/m²K
1Batumi (also Kutaisi)0.50
2Tbilisi0.38
3Tianeti0.25

The limits come from Table 3 of Government of Georgia Resolution No. 354 of 13 July 2021 (as amended; current consolidated text on matsne.gov.ge). See energy efficiency rules for the tolerances and the procedure.

What the result does not replace

  • Thermal conductivity values are typical design values. Use the declared λ of the actual product and the actual wall build-up.
  • ΔU = 0.04 W/m²K is a typical value for aluminium brackets with thermal pads at about 2 brackets per m². Steel brackets, dense bracket spacing or slab-edge fixings need a separate thermal bridge calculation.
  • The result is a pre-design estimate. The design value comes from the thermal calculation in the facade project, together with the condensation check and the fire requirements for the insulation.

Insulation thickness also drives the bracket projection and the overall facade thickness.
