HPL worktops

A worktop takes more punishment than any other surface in a kitchen or bar: hot pans, knives, spilled wine and vinegar, wet cloths and constant wiping. Compact HPL, a solid laminate board normally in the 6 to 12 mm range, handles these without staining or swelling. It is lighter than stone, warmer to the touch and cheaper to replace, and it does not need sealing.

Advantages in use

• Closed surface that resists moisture, stains and common household chemicals
• Good scratch and impact resistance compared with laminated chipboard
• Heat tolerance suitable for normal kitchen use, though hot pans are still best placed on a trivet
• Hygienic, easy to wipe, with no pores for bacteria
• Stone, wood and plain decors, so the top can match wall panels or cabinet fronts

Where they are used

Residential kitchens, hotel and restaurant bars, reception desks, laboratory benches, school workshops, shop counters and outdoor kitchens under cover. Because the same decor library is used for wall and facade panels, a worktop can be matched to cladding in the same project.

Details to specify

• Thickness and edge: thinner tops need a supporting frame or board, while thick compact sheets can be self-supporting over short spans.
• Cutouts for hob, sink and tap, with rounded inside corners to avoid cracking.
• Sealed cut edges around the sink area.
• Joints between sections placed away from sink and hob.
