Adhesive system for HPL panels
An adhesive fixing system bonds HPL panels directly to vertical aluminium profiles so that no rivets or screw heads appear on the face. The result is a smooth, monolithic facade, and the method is suited to both exterior and interior cladding on a ventilated subframe. The system offered here is based on a surface activator, a double-sided fixing tape and a one-component STP sealant adhesive.
Components
- Surface activator: cleans, degreases and prepares the aluminium profile and the back of the panel to improve adhesion.
- Fixing tape, 12 mm wide: holds the panel while the adhesive cures and defines the required joint of 3 mm for the sealant bead.
- Sealant adhesive: a UV-resistant, vibration-resistant, non-shrinking STP-polymer product that stays put on vertical surfaces, applied as a triangular bead.
Installation sequence
Profiles are cleaned and activated, the tape is stuck along both edges of the profile, a bead of adhesive is applied at a set distance from the tape, and the panel is pressed into place. The panel is then supported until the adhesive is cured. Temperature, humidity and surface preparation have a strong influence on bond quality, so manufacturers' instructions must be followed exactly, ideally by trained installers.
Design considerations
- Bonded systems restrict removal of a single panel, so plan for access where services are located.
- Adhesive must be compatible with the panel back surface and the profile coating.
- Wind load, panel size and sliding of the bond line are verified in the calculation.
- Check how local requirements for fire and for adhesive-fixed cladding apply above 12 m.
