Subframe for terracotta
Terracotta cladding uses fired natural clay and gives a warm, matte, earthy surface that changes subtly with light. It is among the longest-lasting facade materials: low water absorption of about 3 to 5 percent resists frost and salts, and the colour is the colour of the clay itself and not a coating. The material is often chosen for cultural buildings, hotels, universities and residential projects with a high quality ambition.
System types
- Panels (tiles) hung on horizontal rails with clips or hooks, where each panel sits on the one below
- Baguettes or rods fixed to vertical rails for a rhythmic, shadowed look
- Large-format hollow terracotta panels with slotted edges for rail engagement
Each system uses specific rail profiles with grooves that match the terracotta geometry. Open joints allow the cavity to ventilate and drain.
Design points
- Weight is substantial, often 30 kg/m2 or more depending on the element, so brackets are chosen from stronger series with tighter spacing.
- Tolerances of fired clay vary, so adjust clips to absorb small differences in size.
- Colour varies by firing batch; mix elements from several pallets to blend the shade.
- Edge elements, corners and soffits use special pieces.
- Check performance in freeze-thaw conditions for high-altitude Georgian sites.
- Terracotta is non-combustible, but a facade above 12 m is reviewed as a whole under Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules, including insulation and cavity barriers.
Why design with supply
Joint widths, module sizes and special pieces must fit the openings of your building. Pricing is on request.
Send us your drawings and we will prepare a calculation with the fixing system.
