Wood-look HPL panels

Wood decors give the warmth of timber without its usual drawbacks. Real wood on an exterior needs regular oiling, swells in rain, greys in sun and can burn or rot. HPL with a wood pattern keeps its tone for years, does not need treatment and can be cleaned with water and mild detergent. For this reason it is popular for private houses, small hotels, restaurants, schools and kindergartens.

Character of the decors

Light oak and ash patterns brighten interiors and suit Scandinavian-style projects. Mid-brown walnut and teak tones lend a classic character to entrances and soffits. Dark smoked wood and wenge looks work with black metal and glass in contemporary architecture. A number of decors are offered with wood-pore embossing that follows the printed grain, so the surface feels as well as looks like timber. Always compare a sample in daylight, because wood patterns change in perceived colour with the light.

• Soffits and ceilings of canopies and porches
• Cladding bands between windows, to break up large plaster or stone planes
• Balcony and loggia fronts
• Hotel and restaurant walls, reception desks and bar fronts
• Fences and screens for terraces

Design advice

Lay out boards with grain running in one direction unless a deliberate pattern is wanted. Use shorter, narrower sheets with visible joints to imitate planks, or large sheets with concealed fixing for a calm surface. On sunny elevations in Georgia, darker wood decors reach higher surface temperatures, so provide adequate expansion allowances. For buildings higher than 12 m, check the facade assembly against Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules, since resin-based panels are treated differently from metal.
