Painted steel coil: PE, PVDF and PUR

Pre-painted steel is hot-dip galvanised strip that has been cleaned, primed and coated with a polymer finish on a continuous coil-coating line. Because the strip is painted flat before it is formed, the coating thickness is uniform and the finish is protected by a flexible film that tolerates bending, profiling and folding without cracking. The material is then roll-formed into profiled sheet, folded into cassettes, trims and flashings, or cut for roofing and wall cladding.

VENTFASAD 24 LLC designs ventilated facades and also supplies the materials. Painted steel is a practical, economical option for industrial, logistics, commercial and agricultural buildings in Georgia, and it works equally well as a premium cassette in a refined architectural palette.

Coating systems

  • PE (polyester): good weather and mechanical protection, wide colour range, flexible on bending. Suitable for most inland buildings and interiors.
  • PVDF (fluoropolymer): excellent resistance to ultraviolet light, which makes it the first choice for sun-exposed elevations and colour-critical buildings.
  • PUR (polyurethane): strong resistance to moisture, alkalis, acids and chemicals; recommended for humid regions, coastal districts and industrial sites.

Beyond plain colours, the range includes textured, wood-effect, stone-effect and metallic finishes. Textures hide scratches and fingerprints, and decorative films provide patterns that would be difficult to obtain with paint.

Service life and what it depends on

Coil-coated steel lasts much longer than powder-coated parts finished after forming, mainly because the paint film is applied under controlled factory conditions and bonds strongly to the zinc layer. Real life depends on coating system, zinc weight, environment and detailing. Cut edges are the weak point: they expose steel, and the zinc layer protects them only to a limited extent. In coastal Batumi and in industrial zones, specify a heavier zinc coating, PUR or PVDF and avoid trapping water at edges.

Design points

  • Steel is heavier than aluminium, so the subframe is calculated for the larger dead load.
  • Steel expands less than aluminium, but sliding fixings are still needed on long sheets.
  • Do not combine different metals in contact; isolate them to avoid galvanic corrosion and staining.
  • Cut and drill with suitable tools, and avoid abrasive cutting wheels, because heat damages the coating and zinc around the cut.
  • Treat cut edges and fixing holes according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Fire safety

Steel is non-combustible, which helps with fire design. Even so, the facade is judged as an assembly. In Georgia, buildings above 12 m are reviewed under Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules (Resolution No. 41 of 2016, based on the IBC), and walls with combustible components, such as certain insulations, can require NFPA 285 evidence. We choose the insulation, cavity barriers and fixings alongside the cladding.
