Exterior HPL for ventilated facades

Facade HPL panels are compact laminate boards with a weather-resistant decorative surface designed for rainscreen cladding. Unlike interior grades, the face is formulated to hold colour and gloss level under strong sunlight, rain and temperature swings. The core is dense and non-porous, so the board is stable in the humid conditions of the Black Sea coast as well as in the dry, hot summers of eastern Georgia.

Where and how it looks

Typical uses are full-height cladding of residential and office buildings, balcony fronts, soffits and canopies. Sheets are light compared with stone or fibre cement, so they suit refurbishment where the wall cannot take much extra load.

• Visible fixing: painted rivets or screws into aluminium rails, the most economical solution with a clear, regular fixing pattern.
• Concealed fixing: undercut anchors or adhesive systems for a smooth surface with no visible fasteners.

Whichever method is chosen, the panel must be allowed to move. Holes in the sliding zones are drilled larger than the fixing, and the fixed point is placed near the centre of the sheet.

Fire and design checks

HPL contains organic resin, so building authorities look at it carefully. In Georgia, facades above 12 m are checked under Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules (Resolution No. 41 of 2016, which follows the IBC), and assemblies with combustible components can require NFPA 285 evidence. We design cavity barriers and select insulation with this in mind, rather than adding them later.
