Corten-effect aluminium

Weathering steel such as Corten is loved for its textured, rust-coloured surface, but it has drawbacks: rust runoff can stain stone and paving, the patina takes time to stabilise and the steel is heavy. Corten-effect aluminium imitates the same orange-brown, mottled look on a light, stable, coil-coated sheet. The colour is finished from day one and does not run in rain.

Character

The surface shows irregular cloudy tones from rusty orange to deep brown, giving an earthy, industrial and slightly handmade impression. It looks best in large planes and works well with raw concrete, timber, black metal and green landscaping. It is common in contemporary housing, cultural buildings, restaurants, wineries, landscape pavilions and industrial conversions.

Why aluminium instead of steel

  • Weighs a fraction of weathering steel
  • No rust bleed onto adjacent materials
  • Stable colour with no waiting for oxidation
  • Easy to fold into cassettes and trims
  • Non-combustible metal substrate and corrosion-resistant

Design advice

  • The pattern is irregular, so check how panels from different sheets will meet; mix cassettes from several sheets to avoid repetition.
  • Keep the same finish on the returns, window reveals and trims.
  • Request samples, since a natural look depends on scale and light.
  • Plan sliding fixings and joints for thermal movement.

For wineries and hillside houses in Georgia, a Corten look blends with the landscape, whereas in the dense urban fabric of Tbilisi it can be used as an accent between lighter planes. Facades above 12 m are reviewed under Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules (Resolution No. 41 of 2016), and the full assembly is checked.
