Chameleon colour-shift aluminium

Chameleon finishes use special interference pigments that change hue depending on the angle of view and the light. A panel can appear green from one side, purple from another and bronze from a third. The effect is theatrical and unrepeatable on photographs, so these coatings are chosen for buildings that are meant to be remembered.

Where it fits

  • Landmark entrances and portals
  • Feature walls on cultural, retail and entertainment buildings
  • Showrooms, car dealerships and nightclubs
  • Pavilions, kiosks and temporary structures
  • Sculptural canopies and curved elements

It is not meant for entire conventional elevations, where constant colour change can feel restless. Small surfaces or accent bands let the effect read as deliberate.

Working with the effect

  • The colour shift depends on cassette orientation and curvature, so mock-ups are valuable. Order a large sample and view it from the places where people will see the building.
  • Keep all panels in the same direction, as rotation changes the hue.
  • A smooth, flat substrate is important, since waves distort the reflected colour.
  • Keep the same batch for every cassette of one elevation to ensure the shift is consistent.

Design advice

Consider how the effect looks in morning, noon and evening sun in Georgia, where light is strong for much of the year. Provide sliding fixings for thermal expansion, protect the face during fabrication and handle parts with gloves.

Aluminium is non-combustible, and for buildings above 12 m, Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules (Resolution No. 41 of 2016) is applied to the entire wall in Georgia.
