Chagreen textured aluminium

Chagreen, also called shagreen, is a fine, regular grain that resembles leather. On aluminium sheet the texture is built into the paint film, producing a surface that feels slightly rough and looks dense and matt. The texture scatters light, so reflections are soft, imperfections in flatness are masked and fingerprints are barely visible.

Strengths

  • Matt appearance with real tactile depth
  • Resistant to visible scratches and finger marks
  • Calms glare in strong sun, relevant for south-facing elevations
  • Available in many colours, from white and grey to black and deep tones
  • Same light weight and non-combustible substrate as other coil-coated aluminium

Where it is used

Chagreen is popular at ground-floor level, in entrance zones and on lift doors, where hands touch the surface. It is also used on cassettes for public buildings, schools, and transport facilities, and for window reveals and sunshades. Black and dark grey textured panels make good frames for glazing, because the surface looks deep and quiet.

Design advice

  • Texture adds film thickness, so check minimum bend radius with the supplier.
  • Mix with smooth panels in the same colour for subtle contrast between planes.
  • Protect the textured face during fabrication, since scuffs are difficult to repair.
  • Choose light shades for sunny elevations in Georgia to limit heating and expansion.

Fire design is made for the whole assembly. For buildings above 12 m, Chapter 14 of the Building Safety Rules applies, and we coordinate cavity barriers and insulation with the cladding.
